REP. DOUG COLLINS SLAMS FCC NET NEUTRALITY RULES IN JUDICIARY HEARING

SAYS EXPENSIVE REGULATIONS WOULD DEPRIVE RURAL DISTRICTS OF BROADBAND

WASHINGTON—At today’s House Judiciary Committee hearing, Congressman Doug Collins (R-Ga.) attacked the politicized process by which Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler arrived at new Net Neutrality regulations.

“You’ve allowed the credibility and objectivity of your agency to suffer,” said Collins, who in his opening remarks reminded Wheeler that the FCC, before embracing President Obama’s demand for the “strongest possible rules,” declined to regulate Internet providers like telephone utilities.

“You’ve applied the most antiquated regulatory framework to an area where innovation and growth are thriving,” said the Northeast Georgia representative.

“We can’t regulate our way to more innovation. We can’t regulate our way to more freedom,” he added. “Congress will not allow a tainted agency to undermine our legislative duty and the future of a free and open Internet.”

A Republican FCC commissioner has accused his independent agency of caving to White House pressure. Emails uncovered by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee reveal Wheeler’s concern about an improper political campaign to influence his decision.

The commissioner has also warned that consumers’ Internet bills will rise, while service will suffer. “In rural Northeast Georgia,” predicted Collins. “Internet companies, facing higher taxes, fees and regulation, will dedicate fewer resources to broadband infrastructure we desperately need.”

He plans to introduce a Congressional Resolution of Disapproval that would require only a simple Senate majority to override the FCC’s proposed Net Neutrality regulations.
