Congressman Collins: The President has violated his duty

WASHINGTON—Today, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments in the case of United States v. Texas. During this time, the House of Representatives was allowed 15 minutes to present the case that President Obama has overstepped his authority by ignoring the law and circumventing Congress to further his immigration agenda. On April 4, the House filed an amicus brief to state the position that President Obama has violated the Constitutional separation of powers and failed to faithfully execute the law. Congressman Collins (R-Ga.) issued the following statement:

“The Constitution prohibits the President from writing laws himself. Congress is responsible for making the laws; it is the President’s job to faithfully execute them. This case is just one of many examples of overreach by the President to further his own agenda, but it is one of the most significant because of the amnesty it creates for more than 4 million illegal immigrants. He cannot simply go around Congress just because he doesn’t want to enforce the law and wants to score political points. The House of Representatives has been afforded an opportunity to rebut the President’s executive amnesty at the Supreme Court today, to make our voices and the voices of our constituents heard loud and clear: The President must uphold the laws and recognize the Separation of Powers established by the United States Constitution.”
