Collins Votes to Strengthen National Defense

WASHINGTON—Today the House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2018. Congressman Doug Collins (R-Ga.), an active member of the United States Air Force Reserve, presided over the House during the vote.

“The Constitution charges Congress with providing for our nation’s defense, and I am proud to have been part of fulfilling this responsibility today. The FY 2018 NDAA provides for the training, tools and benefits that our troops deserve as they keep their fellow Americans safe and work with our allies to combat threats to our security and democracy,” said Collins.

The NDAA provides for key pieces of America’s defensive strategy, including a 2.4% pay raise for troops and an addition of nearly 20,000 active duty service members. The bill funds the continued fight against ISIS and other terrorist organizations and invests in ballistic missile defense systems to defend the homeland, U.S. territories, and allies against North Korean threats. It also supports the Israeli missile defense system, including the Iron Dome.

The bill authorizes the creation of Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cyber Institutes at the University of North Georgia (UNG) and five other senior military colleges in order to address a nationwide shortage of cyber professionals and the need to commission lieutenants to the cyber branch. These institutes will respond to this need and further supplement the cyber programs already operating at UNG.

Major elements of the F-35 program are located in Georgia, and the NDAA authorizes multiple new F-35s and funds depot maintenance that could benefit Robins Air Force Base.
