Collins Applauds Delay of Organic Marketing Midnight Rule

WASHINGTON—In one of its last unilateral mandates, the Obama administration finalized a rule requiring organic livestock and poultry producers to adhere to restrictive and counterintuitive animal production and handling requirements. Today, in accordance with directives issued by President Trump, the USDA has delayed the effective date of the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule to May 19, 2017 so that its incoming policy team can review the regulation.

Congressman Doug Collins (R-Ga.) has stated his concerns about this rule’s impact on poultry and livestock industries in letters to former Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, under whom the rule was finalized.

“Northeast Georgia is the poultry capital of the world and understands the intricacies of animal care better than distant federal bureaucrats,” said Collins.

“The Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices requirements were issued by an outgoing administration as an appeal to public sentiment and consumer perception. The rule has no basis in improving food safety or animal welfare, and, in fact, ignores accepted standards and practical effects. The USDA is right to delay its implementation until the facts are borne out in favor of abolishing this misguided decision.”
