WASHINGTON – Today, the House Judiciary Committee held a Full Committee markup of H.R. 3892, the “Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2015”, a bill that directs the State Department to report to Congress within 60 days whether the Muslim Brotherhood meets the criteria to be designated as a foreign terrorist organization. The bill, which was reported favorably by the Committee after a 17-14 vote, also expresses the sense of Congress that the Muslim Brotherhood meets that criteria. Congressman Collins, who cosponsored the bill, issued the following statement after the markup:

“Foreign terrorists seek to destroy this country, because they simply cannot stand the very concept of our freedom. The Constitutional liberties we have in this country are unfathomable sins to them, and they have acted time and time again through violence and bloodshed motivated by hate. In 2000, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood named Shaykh Abd-al-Majd Al-Zindani was a co-conspirator in the attack on the USS Cole. This attack – and other radical jihadist attacks on America and its allies – are clear illustrations that the Muslim Brotherhood poses a direct and severe threat to U.S. national security. We must do everything we can to stop them from further spreading their dangerous ideology and violent extremism. This legislation forces the Administration to address the long history of the Muslim Brotherhood’s involvement with terrorism around the world.”
