Collins Statement on Verdict in Kate Steinle Case

Dec 1, 2017

WASHINGTON—A jury has acquitted Jose Ines Garcia Zarate of murder, manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon in the 2015 death of Kate Steinle. Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) released the following statement in response:

“While I’m dismayed at this unfortunate verdict, I’m even more disturbed that Americans continue to face violence at the hands of criminal aliens who have been released into our communities by misguided authorities in our own country.

“America was founded on the rule of law, and Kate Steinle’s death reminds us why the rules of our democracy matter. When individuals or local authorities refuse to enforce the law, they put their neighbors at risk. In order to increase the penalties for illegal aliens who re-enter the country illegally after being deported and to hold sanctuary cities accountable, I supported both Kate’s Law and the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act when they passed the House this year.

“The outcome of the Garcia Zarate trial demonstrates that these bills are more necessary than ever, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to make our immigration enforcement laws stronger and smarter for the sake of my neighbors in northeast Georgia and across these United States.”
