WASHINGTON — Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) released the following statement after President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order on strengthening and reforming policing in America:

“The executive order President Trump signed today lays a strong foundation for strengthening policing standards while prioritizing public safety. As the President said, increasing accountability and transparency in policing is not mutually exclusive with keeping our communities safe. Together, we can achieve both objectives.

“Recent tragedies – like the death of George Floyd – have highlighted the necessity to bring our communities and our law enforcement officers together to strengthen relations and restore public trust. Last Congress, we were able to achieve historic criminal justice reform by doing just that. It is my hope that Congress can implement similar strategies to achieve real, bipartisan solutions.

“As we consider reforms, we cannot ignore the fact that the vast majority of our police officers are courageous men and women who put their lives on the line each and every day to serve and protect our communities. As I learned from my father, a Georgia State Trooper, serving in law enforcement is one of the most dangerous and most difficult jobs, even on the days when you do come home alive. To the many officers – past and present – who serve or have served, we thank you for your sacrifice.”
