Collins Honors Judge Sidney Smith at Courthouse Naming
GAINESVILLE, Ga.—Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) joined the community of Gainesville this morning to name the city’s federal building and courthouse the Sidney Oslin Smith, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse in honor of the judge and his legacy.
“Judge Sidney Smith was a Renaissance man. He became a lawyer. He ran for judge. He was appointed to the bench, and he served the university system and his community through private practice.
“Anyone who wants to make a difference needs heroes. We need role models, and when someone like Judge Smith provides an example that we can follow, we should honor that. That’s why I sponsored legislation to rename this courthouse in honor of this outstanding northeast Georgian, and it’s a privilege to help ensure that Judge Smith’s legacy continues to enrich our community,” said Collins following the ceremony.
Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), Bobby Lee Cook, Sidney O. Smith, III and others also offered remarks in celebration of Smith’s contributions to Gainesville and the courtroom.
