IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Congressman Collins Special Order on Songwriter Equity Act

Washington, D.C. – Last night, Congressman Doug Collins, joined by Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), hosted a Special Order on the House floor dedicated to recognizing the creative contributions songwriters make to the music industry, and the hurdles they face when negotiating the value of their work. The Special Order focused on pushing for the passage of H.R. 1283, the Songwriter Equity Act of 2015, which will empower songwriters to negotiate a fair price for their intellectual property.

“Songwriting is music’s most regulated sector. Seventy-five percent of a songwriter’s income is regulated, some of which, [the mechanical rights] go back to 1909. They are still governed by player pianos.”
